There is an effort underway to try and save one of the most historic and iconic landmarks in country music. This week, plans have moved forward to replace the landmark with a Margaritaville hotel.
The building is located in Atlanta, and it's where Fiddlin’ John Carson once recorded what’s widely considered to be the first country-music hit in 1923. The building has been under threat of demolition for a while now. In fact, a crew from a demolition company began gutting the historic building’s interior Tuesday.
A review of the developer’s design plans found that the “lot occupied by the historic building would be used for the dumpsters and grease traps next to the first-floor Margaritaville restaurant.
There's at least one silver lining to this story as there is an online petition to save the building that has well over 8,000 signatures, establishing public interest in music-related historic preservation.
