Online dating has gone from just meeting potential partners on a dating site to actually doing those dates virtually, thanks to COVID. A survey of more than 5-thousand users of the dating app Hinge finds nearly half have been on a video date since the pandemic started and 52% say they’ll keep doing them even after it’s safe to meet in person again. And sure, video dates make a safe, socially distanced way to meet up with a match, but if you’re not face-to-face with them, you can’t do any physical flirting, like brushing your hand against theirs or touching the small of their back.

So how do you show you’re interested during a Zoom date? Behavioral adviser Anne-Maartje Oud and body language expert Blanca Cobb share their tips for video date flirting.

  • Lean in - Whether you’re online or in person, when you’re interested in someone, it’s natural to want to be closer to them. For a virtual date, Cobb advises showing this by leaning toward the camera, so it’s like you’re getting closer.
  • Expose your neck - Since the neck is a vulnerable part of the body, showing it off may be a sign of flirtation. To add more intrigue, Cobb suggests turning your body to an angle and as you’re exposing your neck, move a shoulder down. She explains, “This gives a different appearance of your body frame and it can be very playful.”
  • Be more expressive in your movements - Things like raising your eyebrows, nodding, twirling your hair, fidgeting with your necklace or gently rubbing your skin are all potential signs of attraction. Oud notes that a head-tilt is also another big nonverbal communication that shows interest, as does a good old flirty smile.
  • Ask about their environment - Being curious about your date’s passions is another way to show you’re interested. But asking them to tell you about themself can be boring, so try to find a poster, book, or something in their background and ask for the story behind it. And on the flip side, make your background more personal than sitting against a blank wall, so they have a chance to get to know you better based on your surroundings.
