Folks on social media are in shock after realizing for the first time that Darius Rucker is singing about a football team in the Hootie & The Blowfish classic "Only Wanna Be With You."

The realization came to fans after Post Malone  dropped his take on the Hootie song in conjunction witih Pokémon Day, marking the video game’s 25th anniversary. In the song Post changed up the lyrics to sing the "Cowboys make me cry," which has made folks realize that when Darius sings “the Dolphins make me cry" he wasn’t singing about the animal, but about the Miami Dolphins football team.

“Wait. When Darius Rucker sang “And the Dolphins made me cry” he wasn’t talking about the ocean animals? He was talking about the Miami Dolphins? What???” one person commented, while another added, “I was today years old when I realized the lyric “I’m such a baby, yeah the Dolphins make me cry” is about the Miami dolphins. I always thought Darius Rucker cried at the beach.”

  • Meanwhile, Darius is all for Post's version of the song. He re-shared it on social media, tweeting, "The smile in my face will not leave for a long time. This is awesome. My bro @PostMalone bringing it. Hell yes man!!!!!!!!!"
  • Darius shared his feelings about the cover with Variety, noting, "It’s awesome to see that a song we wrote almost 30 years ago continues to resonate as it really speaks to the lasting life a song can have when people connect with it,” adding, “I love seeing someone like Post put his own spin on it like he does with everything he records.”
